If Democrats Had Any Brains, They’d Be Republicans

November 5, 2009

if-democrats-had-brains Book summary: Conservative columnist Ann Coulter takes on liberal politicians once again in her 2007 bestseller If Democrats Had Any Brains, They’d Be Republicans. This book is a collection of some of Coulter’s best quotes from articles and interviews that she’s given during the course of her career. She samples heavily from previous books and novels she has written, and gives short transcripts from television appearances on such shows as Crossfire, The O’Reilly Factor, and Hardball.

The quotes are arranged by topics that include airport security, abortion, Christians, Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, Colleges, Elections, Hollywood, McCarthyism, John Kerry, Ted Kennedy, and more. Each topic gets anywhere from 3-10 pages of quotes, plus a short introduction from Coulter.

There is very little new material in this book; it’s more of a “best of” or “greatest hits” compilation than anything else.

  • I’m not all that interested in politics, but when I do get involved, I tend to be conservative. I have seen Ann Coulter on talk shows, of course, but usually end up tuning out after just a couple of minutes because everyone starts screaming and cross-talking, which I think is annoying. From this book, I learned that Coulter is much more palatable on paper. This was actually a fun read!
  • Sure, Coulter’s ideas are a extreme and she resorts to an awful lot of name-calling and taunting. I’m not saying that I take every single thing she writes at face value, I’m just saying that she’s good for a laugh. And she does make a few decent points at times.
  • There’s no question that Coulter is intelligent. It’s quite refreshing to read someone who uses interesting word choices (I had to look up no fewer than six words in this book, including “harridan”, “picayune”, and “précis”) and puts forth compelling arguments for a change. This book made me realize how watered down typical AP and Reuters news articles are.

  • This was my very first Ann Coulter book, and I didn’t know it was a “best of” type of effort. I was disappointed at first (even though it was my fault for not bothering to read the description before ordering), but quickly got over it because the content was to my liking.
  • Because Coulter addresses so many diverse topics in this book, it was hard to get into any kind of flow. I think the categories are arranged alphabetically, which made the whole thing seem kind of random. I guess on the plus side, you can pick up the book and read any chapter you want. But I prefer books that progress logically.

If Democrats Had Any Brains, They’d Be Republicans by Ann Coulter is a fun, quick read that most conservatives are likely to enjoy. Again, I don’t agree with everything she says or the way she says it, but taken as entertainment, this book scores a solid 4 stars out of 5.
