My mom was just laid off from her job. Understandably, she’s still reeling from the shock of losing a position she had for more than 20 years. She was just two years short of retirement, but still… it’s going to be so hard for her to adjust to not having anything to do all day.
I’m not sure if she wants to look for another job now or just consider this an early retirement. She’ll be able to collect unemployment benefits for a while, and her severance package includes being paid her regular salary for the next five months, so I don’t think she’ll be in trouble financially. And I’m not even sure how feasible an IT job search for a 60-year-old woman would be these days. If she does go back to work, I’m almost certain it would be in a part-time capacity in an unrelated field.
At any rate, I’ve decided to buy my mom this book called Career Comeback by Bradley Richardson. It’s a guide that helps people deal with being fired or laid off, and also gives them an eight-step plan to get back on their feet and get a new job. This book might at least give my mom something to occupy her mind with during these first few critical days after being laid off. We’ll see!
