BTT: Best Book You’ve Never Read

Today’s Booking Through Thursday meme poses the following question:

We’ve all seen the lists, we’ve all thought, “I should really read that someday,” but for all of us, there are still books on “The List” that we haven’t actually gotten around to reading. Even though we know they’re fabulous. Even though we know that we’ll like them. Or that we’ll learn from them. Or just that they’re supposed to be worthy. We just … haven’t gotten around to them yet.

What’s the best book that YOU haven’t read yet?

The title that immediately jumps to mind for me is Ulysses by James Joyce. It’s on practically every single “best of” list that I’ve ever looked at, and yet I’m scared to even try to tackle it on my own. There’s no way in hell I’ll understand any of it without having a critical guide at my fingertips… there’s just far too much going on in those pages (from what I’ve heard) for a mere mortal like me to make sense of anything.

Another good book that a lot of people have loved is The Lord of the Rings, but I already know that I’ll never read it. I am NOT a fan of sci-fi/fantasy at all, and since I couldn’t even sit through the first 15 minutes of the film, I doubt I’d be able to push my way through the novel.

And finally, I would like to attempt Proust’s In Search of Lost Time someday, but again, the denseness of the novel and the lack of having a literature prof leading the way deters me from the task.
